May in the vineyard means rapid shoot growth and clusters beginning to form. April rain followed by sunny days has set up the vineyard for an explosion of growth to start the 2026 season. In this phase we perform the first round of green pruning, selecting which shoots stay and which are sacrificed for the good of those remaining.
Another important task in May is keeping the ground cover under control. As an organic farm we do not use any chemicals to manage the vegetation, we let nature take over and encourage spontaneous growth of native species. This strategy gives us much satisfaction from an ecological and grape quality perspective, and comes with many hours of dedicated mechanical growth containment, to make sure the old vines are in order and the new vines have enough access to nutrients to ensure survival in their early years.
